A Historic Revival: Café 1888 in Aurora’s First Hospital

Café 1888 is nestled within Aurora’s original hospital building, constructed in 1888—a year of great significance for the city, as it also marked Aurora’s official incorporation as a town. This historic 25-bed facility was a beacon of modern medical innovation for its time, incorporating advancements developed during and after the Civil War, such as antiseptic surgical techniques and improved patient care standards. Before its establishment, medical care in Aurora was limited to home visits, with doctors traveling long distances to treat patients in their residences, making the hospital a transformative addition to the community.

As Aurora grew, so did the hospital. By 1901, the town had expanded to a population of 1,590, and the hospital evolved alongside it, eventually developing into the multi-story complex that stood for over a century. Generations of Aurorans were born, treated, and cared for within its walls, making it a landmark of healing and progress. However, after serving the community for more than a hundred years, the hospital closed its doors in 1995, leaving behind a 10-acre campus that, over time, fell into disrepair.

Recognizing the historical and cultural significance of the site, Mayor Richard C. Irvin, along with a dedicated team of developers, contractors, and city officials, embarked on an ambitious restoration project to breathe new life into the once-abandoned campus. Through careful planning and preservation efforts, the hospital was transformed into Bloomhaven, a thriving community that honors its past while embracing a new future. Today, Bloomhaven is home to Bardwell Senior Residences, offering comfortable living for seniors; Weston Bridges, a supportive community for adults with mild disabilities; and a state-of-the-art medical campus operated by VNA Health, ensuring that the site’s legacy of care continues.

At the heart of this revitalized space is Atrevete’s Café 1888, which proudly carries forward the spirit of connection and service that has defined this historic building for over a century. More than just a coffee shop, Café 1888 serves as a gathering place where history and community intertwine—a reminder of Aurora’s resilience and dedication to preserving its rich heritage. Whether visitors come for a cup of coffee or to reflect on the history embedded within its walls, Café 1888 stands as a symbol of transformation, honoring the past while embracing the future.
